Fig.1
Bordered pits of angiosperm and gymnosperm and the "air seeding hypothesis" a and b revised from Choat et al.(2008), c and d revised from Cochard(2006). a. Bordered pit pairs in between vessels of angiosperm xylem, bordered pit membrane is composed of primary wall and compound middle lamella. b. Bordered pits in between tracheids of gymnosperm xylem, with the bordered pit membrane composed of torus and margo. c. Air enters from embolised vessel in the left into water filled vessel through micropores of the bordered pit membrane, which reflects towards the pit aperture and stretches under the pressure difference between two neighbouring vessels, and pits become aspriated. d. Air enters from embolised tracheid in the left into water filled tracheid through the margo of the bordered pit membrane, which reflects towards the pit aperture and stretches under the pressure difference between two neighbouring tracheids, then, the torus blocks the pit aperture and pits become aspriated."
