During the period of March-June, 1978, the shoot growth of phyllostachys pubcsccns, Ph. praccox, Ph. nigra var. henonis, Ph. glauca and Ph. viridis were observed and measured daily. Of the first two species a young vigorous shoot for each was taken to make slides with a conventional microtomic method. Results obtained are given as follows: 1. The height growth of a bamboo shoot results mainly from the elongation of internodes which occurs neither at same time nor at same speed. The internodal elongation begins at the basal portion of the shoot where a number of elongating internodes, 14-16 for Ph. pubcscens and 10-12 for Ph. Praccox form an elongating zone and then gradually procced upward to the top in accordance with the slow-quick-slow pattern of growth. This pattern is also followed by elongating activity of individual internodes. 2. The apical meristematic zone of a bamboo shoot is pyramidal in shape and can be clearly divided into a top part (apical meristem) and a lower part (subapical meristem). The former consists of tunica-corpus and thee later is derived from meristematic tissue with differentiated sheath (leaf) primordia and procambia (provascular bundles). 3. As the shoot growth advances, some of provaseular bundles Become curved diatropically at the position of young sheath and transverse aeross the pith to initiate a new node. This newly initiated node can be recognized as the lower demarcation of the apical meristematic zone. 4. According to the literature related, an intercalary meristem is an inserted meristematic tissue in the mature tissue. As seen in bamboo shoots, it is derectly derived from the apical meristem and is separated into a number of intercalary sections by successively formed nodes. 5. The procambium further differentiates into phloem and xylem. Consequently the former develops into sieve tubes and companion cells and the later into vessels and fiber cclls. All these differentiated elements are morphologically distributed and embedded in the intercalary meristem where they divide continuously to produce the saune elements. Thus, vascular systems are not interrupted, though nodes separate the meristem into a number of intercalary zones.

This article essentially describes automatic opto-electronic measuring system of logs. The system consists of two units: diameter measuring unit and length measuring unit. The diameter measuring unit is composed of parabolic type laser scanner, synchronizing part and photoelectric detectors with optical fibre as light transmission path. The length measuring unit comprehends length measuring disc and passing log sensor. The operation principle is discussed and then the circuit of input signal control, data processing and output display are presented. The system can be used on automatic production lines of timber storage yards, timber mills etc. Measuring range of logs: diameter 14-80cm; Length 2-8m.

The nutrient accession in throughfall under the canopies of Tutcheria spcctabilis and Melaleuca leucadendron was studied for a period of 12 months. Upon passing the canopies, rainwater was enriched with nutrients through the leaching of leaf-impinged particles and leaf exudates. During the study period, the K, Na, Ca and Mg contents of the incident rainfall were 9.5, 19.1, 11.6 and 3.0 kg/ha, respectively. The contents of these elements in Tutcheria throughfall were 28.5, 23.0, 18.7 and 5.2 kg/ha; whereas the corresponding values for Melalcuca throughfall were 30.3, 36.0, 27.3 and 11.4 kg/ha, respectively. Owing to the differences in species, precipitation and leachability of elements, pronounced seasonal variations exist in throughfall nutrient accession. Nutrient return approximates precipitation closely in a semi-log curve, indicating a limited and gradual supply of nutrients from their respective sources between the intervals of rain.

Methods of preparing 2 forest fire extinguishing agents were described. The main ingredient of the first one, named as"704", is the common fertilizer, ammonium phosphate, while that of the second, named as "type 75", is a mixture of ammonium sulphate and phosphate. Effectiveness of those agents was tested by loading 1 ton of them in a Trans. -5 airtanker, flying at a height of 30-40m with a crusing speed of 150km./hr., and spraying in amount of 0.4-0.7 kg/m2 wind velocity at ground level was 5-6m/sec. at the time. Surface fire, scrab fire, and grass fire, in woods of valley lowland were effectively retarded and put out.

Concerning the quality of valonia tannin, there are two different views. This paper attempts to find out a solution of this problem. A review of the possible pathway of the biosynthesis of valonia tannin and the seven individual tannins, with different structures, in the valonia extract was made. Experiments were carried out for the evaluation of valonia tannin. The effect of aping on the change of tan solution showed that the tannin/nontannin ratio was decreased as the aging time prolonged, which indicated that the chemical behaivor of the complex components of the tan liquor was unstable. They are going to change continuously with aging and during the tanning process but will always keep a relative balance between tannin and nontannin. The rate of diffusion of valonia tannin was quick. It's tanning power to combine with collagen was strong. Leather tanned with fresh valonia extraet was of good quality, plumpness, solidity, high weight yield and the physico-chemical properties agreed with the sole leather quality index. Therefore it is sugested that valonia tannin is one kind of the best tannins.

In the present paper two new species of sawflies are described, one belonging to the genus Macrophya and the other to the genus Caliroa. 1. Macrophya fraxina New sp. (Fig. Ⅰ) This species resembles M. verticalis Konow, but differs from it in the following characters: Body black with yellowish white spots. Two yellowish white triangular spots on the median lobes of mesonotum. Each side of the Ⅰ-Ⅷ abdominal segments has an oblong spot. Two oblong spots on the median part of the posterior margin of Ⅶ-Ⅷ abdominal tergites. Saw small and short, notches of saw very shallow. 2. Caliroa camellia New sp. (Fig. Ⅱ) This species resembles C. vaccini Okutani, but differs from it in the following characters: The apices of coxae and tibiae yellow. Tarsal claws with cleft; the inner teeth more or less parallel to and shorter than the outer teeth. Wings yellow and hyaline, hind wings with middle cells. The types are deposited in the insect collection of the Forest Research Institute, Chinese Academyof Forestry, Beijing, China.

Using Trichogramma for post control in a great agricultural and forestt area has been developed. However, rearing with natural host eggs can't meet the need for the great area, and therefore we started the investigation work for artificial mimicking egg of Trichogramma host. In 1977, we successfully used artificial nutrient medium to grow Trichogramma for three generations. Artificial egg was then in 1978 successfully made outt of artificial shell containing nutrient medium. Trichogramma dondrolimi laid eggs in the artificial host eggs and the eggs laid developed into adult which can get out of the artifical shell. The artificial nutrient medium consists of yolk, milk. Neisenheimer's salt, 30% hemolymph-plasma of Antheraea pernyi pupa. In the first half of 1979, some ervstal amino acids were added into the nutrient medium and the amount of homolymph-plasma of Antheraea pernyi pupa dccreased to 9.8%. In this medium the egg of Trichogramma can develop to adult, and some adults can occasionally unfold wings. The proportion of amino acids and pretein contents in nutrient medium, the physical properties of artificial medium and the hormone secretion and nutrition of insect with relation to environmental conditions will need further investigation.
