Abstract: Based on the findings of this investigation, tthe traditional saying that C.lancealata,a species in the south of the Yangtze River, can not grow well in Fu Niu Shan is broken. And the same is the case with another saying that P.massoniana can only show vigorous growth in the south of the Hwai River.Through investigation,we likewise find out the rules of growth and dis- tribution of these two species in Honan Province which, apparently, will provide scientific basis for further extending their range and raising the growth rate. 1.The horizontal distribution of C.lanceolata is rather extensive in Honan. They are dis- tributed from the Ta Pieh Shan and Tung Pai Shah to southern slope of Fu Niu Shan, and a few reach the northern slope of Fu Niu Shan in lat.33°50′N (P.massoniana) and 34°5′N ( C.lanceolata). The vertical distribution of C.lanceolata is as follows: Ta Pieh Shah, about 800 meters above the sea level; T'ung Pal Shan,400 meters below;Fu Niu Shan, maximum 1,100—1,300 meters. The vertical distribution of P.massoniana in Ta Pieh Shah and T'ung Pal Shah is 600—700 meters; in Fu Niu Shah is 500 meters below and a few reach 1,000 meters. 2.The quantitative age of single C.lanceolata in Honan is about 40 years.By this time the height reaches 14 m.,d.b.h.25 cm.,and volume production 0.35 cubic meters. The quan- titative age of P.massoniana in Honan is about 30—40 years.By this time the height growth is 10--17 m.,d.b.h.12—32 cm.,volume production 0.066—0.662 cubic meter. By comparing with the same species in other provinces, the above-mentioned increment is in the medium; still they belong to the fast-growing species of coniferous tree,as their growth is better than those of P.tabulaefomis and P.Armandi in Honan and the growth of C.lanceolata is better than those in North Chekiang and East Szechuan. 3.The favourable growth condition for these two species in Honan is:the location at the lower and middle slopes of the mountains, shielded from the wind, deep and fertile soil with good drainage. If these conditions can be obtained,it is not impracticable to further extend the planting regions to the northern slope of Fu Niu Shan,Tai Hang Shan and the plain of East Honan, especially with species such as C.lanceolata.While Selecting the environmental conditions, steps should be taken to make forestry measures running according to,agricultural and horticultural methods:With these arrangements,it is fully practicable to carry out the Last-growth and high- yields campaign for planting C.lanceolata and P.massoniana in mountain regions south of Fu Niu Shah and to reach the target figures of 30—35 cubic meters per mou for P.massoniana and 40—45 cubic meters for C.lanceolata with a rotation of 15 years.
