Recent experiment on direct seeding of Haloxylon persicum in desert area seems suc- cessful. This achievement has undoubtedly laid the foundation for the large-seale scheme of desert transformation. There are two marked vegetating features.1) They germinate rapidly and produce uniform stands of seedlings.Under optimum temperature and mois- ture condition.sprouts will all bud out of the earth within 24 hours.2) Fast in growing. For the first four months.from April to July.the height of seedling reaches 60 cm;the diameter of seedling crown 70cm;the diameter" of seedling root 1.7 cm;and the deep- ness of seedling root over 100 cm. Experiment shows direct seeding with Haloxylon persicum fare favourably in slightly stable desert.with an average monthly soil moisture of 5 and underground water table approximately 3 motets.Early spring is considered the most suitable season for sowing, 166 grams of seeds per mou is preferable. The method is simple and direct.that is.by broadcast sowing by hand will do.8—10 hectares a worker may sprinkle daily. In sands where irrigation work is feasible.production of nursery stock will yield good results. In such regions.if watering and weeding be carried out two or three times a year.the height of seedling in four months will be expected to reach 90 em;the diameter of seedling crown 70 cm;and the diameter of seedling root 1.8 cm. Haloxylon persicum not only suit their growth in slightly stable desert.also grow well in movable sands. They possess a special resistauce to wind erosion and sand-covering. They also suit growth in slightly alkali soil.On the whole.Haloxylon persicum is a species desirable for desert transformation.worthy to be popularized and cultivated ener- getically in wide desert area.
