Abstract: The method of cutting is widely used in horticulture and forestry both in woody and herbaceous plants and proved much easier and convenient. In order to increase more plants for establishing Nanking Botanical Garden, we started with about 5(10 species in 75 different families and 200 genera including some 400 dicots of both woody and herbaceous elements, 50 conifers and a few monocots. According to the nature of the plants in different conditions namely:medium of soil, temperature, intensity of light, humidity, etc. and in some cases chemical treatment were applied for comparsion. These tests were carried in the frames of both outdoors and ndoors and some others were stored or stratified for a period of time before insertion to the medium. Among the bulk of the cuttings we chose ten important species for the test. They are as follows: 1. Laurus nobilis L. Cuttings with heels in pure fine sand rooted better than in garden soil. When treated with NAA (50 p.p.m. for 24 hrs.) they were much better. 2. Torreya grandis Fort.-Greenwood cuttings rooted more rapid than that of the hardwood. When treated with NAA (50 p p m. for 24 hrs.) rooting percentage approached 60%. 3. Aleurites fordii Hemsl, Greenwood cutting of young trees taken in autumn in the frame control humidity, percentage of rooting approached 80%. 4. Eucommia ulmoides Oliv. General outdoor hardwood cutting in garden soil rooted about 50%, greenwood cutting made better result. When treated with NAA (50 p p.m. 24 hrs.) rooting percentage approached 80%. 5. Ginkgo biloba L.-Greenwood cutting rooted above 90%, hardwood cutting could raise to the same percentage if they were stratified. In winter open cutting of hardwood rooted up to 80%. 6. Distylium racemosum S. et Z.-Cuttings of semi-hardwood in garden soil mixed with sand rooted up to 80%. 7. Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu et Cheng-Hardwood cutting when stratified rooted above 90%, greenwood cutting; rooting percentage approached 80%, treated with NAA was very effective, Medium with pure sand was better than the other. 8. Pranus yedoensis f. shojo Wils.-Hardwood cutting when stratified rooted to 85 %, while in greenwood cutting only 50%. Treated with NAA was effective. In winter open cutting of hardwood up to 50%. 9. Prianus Laurocerasus Linn,-In summer semi-hardwood cutting in sand soil mixed with garden soil rooted up to 90%, greenwood cutting rooted about the same percentage. 10. Magnolia liliflora Desrouss.-Greenwood cutting in garden soil mixed with half pure sand rooted up to 75%, with NAA treatment was effective, hardwood cutting when stratified made hotter result.
