Abstract: Tree seedlings for forest planting work are generally supplied from nurseries where toy may be raised in large quantities and along planned lines. But when seedlings are nsufficient, to dig them from forests is a supplementary work worthy of consideration. This can be done with due technique and in combination with forest tending work without damaging the forest. This paper gives, a preliminary conclusion which the writer has drawn from transplanting seedlings in large quantities in forests from Hwang-Shan, Anwhei tò Nanking in 1951 and 1953. The main content of this paper is a discussion of some technical problems concerning the method of transplantings seedlings in forests. This experiment shows good results as the survival rate of seedlings transplanted is over 80%. More so, this method is, in some respects, better than insemination; first, we can get larger saplings within a short period of time than we can do by insemination, second, as different tree seeds ripen at different time, we cannot get seeds of all trees simultaneouly, but we can easily get saplings of many species at the same time; third, as the characters of the species and varieties transplanted may be retained; fourthly, as some plants bear fruits difficultly or get seeds difficultly as a result of diodcious and some tree seeds germinate difficultly, it is advisable to use the method of transplantation Hence, digging seedlings from forests, inder certain conditions, is a better method of introduction.
