Abstract: Cryptotympana atrata (Fabr. ) is an important branch-boring pest of poplar, elms, apple etc. Observations have shown that five years are required for the pest to complete a generation. The pest overwinters as larva in the soil and as egg in the branch. The adult occurs from early July to mid-August. Oviposition begins in mid-July; the peak of egg-laying is in mid-August; the egg period is from 260 to 340 days. The longevity of the adult is from 45 to 60 days. The sex ratio is 1:1. The adult male likes to sing. The adults have the characteristics of cybotaxis and the sociality} the space distribution pattern of the adult in the forest coincides with the aggregated negative binomial distribution. The effective control measures include the selection of the varieties of poplar resistant to the damage of the cicadj cutting branches with eggs in winter; dusting or spraying chemical pesticides on the host tree crown during oviposition period and on the forest floor during nymphal emerging period, and watering the soil with ammonia water in late June and interpianting corn young tree.
